Neverland Adventure Camp planned for musical theater performers
“The purpose of the Neverland Adventure Camp is to provide additional training to those who have done musical theater before as well as for beginners who are trying to decide if musical theater is an art they want to pursue,” said Molly Page, manager of Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center and an organizer of the camp. “It’s for all levels of performers from 5 years old to 15 years old.”
The five-day musical theater camp will end with a full performance of “Peter Pan Jr.” at 2:30 p.m. June 29 at Wallace Hall Fine Arts Center. Campers will receive two free tickets for family members. Additional tickets are $5. Children ages 3 and under are free.
“In the end, they will be able to show off the new techniques and skills they’ve learned for their family and friends,” said Santana Carlton, director of the CharACTers Children’s Theatre and the camp co-organizer. “It’s fun for them to wrap up a week of training with a performance.”
Carlton said each day will be filled with games, rehearsals, arts and crafts, costumes and the magic of theater.
“We have designed the curriculum so that they learn a lot about live theater while having a great time,” she said.
Auditions for the performance of “Peter Pan Jr.” will be held June 25 to determine roles for the show. Students are asked to prepare 30 seconds of any song from any musical or movie. Campers may be asked to read various lines and learn short dance combinations.
“This will be a low-pressure, friendly and fun experience in a supportive environment for the kids,” Page said.
Campers will train from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. They should wear loose comfortable clothing they can easily move in. They should wear sneakers or dance shoes. No open shoes or flip flops. Campers should bring a simple lunch that does not require refrigeration or heating.
The cost of the camp is $120. There are sibling discounts available. The fee includes a t-shirt, snack, show costume, pizza party and a free ticket to CharACTers’ production of “Peter Pan” June 22-24 and June 29-July 1.
