A lawn mower and tractor retailer in Piedmont plans to expand and hire more workers this year.

Mayor Bill Baker announced on his Facebook page Monday that Boston, Ga.-based retail chain Ag-Pro Companies plans to invest $1 million to relocate its Piedmont business to a larger facility at the U.S. 278 bypass and hire more employees. Kenneth Williams, Ag-Pro’s division president for Alabama and northwestern Georgia, said the company needs more space to meet its expansion plans.

Williams said he expects to hire around six new employees during the coming months for a total of about 17 workers for the business that Ag-Pro bought in January. Ag-Pro, which sells and services John Deere equipment in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Texas, bought Piedmont Outdoors in January.

“Since we’ve taken over, we’ve already added four people and brought the total number up to 10 employees,” Williams said.

Construction of the more than 15,000- square-foot facility is expected to begin in April. Williams said he hopes to have the new store open by late fall.
